I exist as I am, that is enough
If no other in the world be aware I sit content
And if each and all be aware I sit content.
Walt Whitman (From “Song of Myself,” 1855)
Whitman speaks with a kind of freedom that most of us spend our whole lives searching for. To exist as you are and feel that it is enough can sound simple, yet it is one of the hardest truths to accept. We build our sense of worth from the eyes of others, from their attention, their approval, their recognition. Whitman turns away from all of that and says that he sits content whether anyone sees him or not.
There is a quiet power in learning to live without needing an audience. To be content in your own company, to be at ease in your own presence, to know yourself without the reflection of someone else. This is not isolation. It is arrival. It is the moment when belonging switches from external to internal, when you realise that peace begins with your own acceptance.
To exist as you are is not just enough. It is the foundation of every good thing that can grow from you.
